It was found that the bubbling of sulfur dioxide through a suspension of ta
ntalum pentachloride in benzene and tert-butylbenzene affords diphenyl sulf
inate derivatives H-2[TaCl5(O2S)(C6H5)(2)] and H-2[(TaOCl3)(2)(O2S)R-2]RH (
R = C6H5 Or t-BuC6H4) at room temperature or H-2[(TaOCl3)(2)(O2S)(C6H5)(2)]
in boiling benzene. The conclusion about the composition and structure of
the complexes was based on the data of elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spec
troscopy. Hydrolysis of H-2[TaCl5(O2S)(C6H5)(2)] gave diphenyl sulfoxide. T
he mechanism for its formation is proposed.
