Abstract
The photochemistry of title compound 2 and its hydrogen halide salts was in vestigated in solution and in the solid state. In the solid state the halid e ions were shown to cause a heavy atom effect that was not observed in sol ution. The orientation of the halide ions towards the chromophore was deter mined on the basis of the corresponding structures in the solid state as de termined by X-ray crystallography.
