The prediction of rock and gas outbursts as a multivariate hazard is discus
sed against the background of the most frequently applied theories of outbu
rst description and with reference to system concepts of outburst modelling
. An outburst is conceived of as an event and a new version of an outburst
prognostic model is developed. Contrary to most approaches, which consider
an outburst as a physical process, the concept presented is based on data o
btained through field measurement. Finally, a new concept of ranking the in
fluence of the various causes of outbursts is presented.
