Our study was designed to investigate the aerobic and anaerobic microbiolog
y of keratitis. We conducted a retrospective review of the clinical and mic
robiological records of samples collected for aerobic and anaerobic bacteri
a as well as fungi from patients from 1973 to 1990. A total of 173 organism
s (1.2 per specimen)-98 aerobic or facultative anaerobic, 68 anaerobic, and
7 fungi-were recovered. These data highlight the potential importance of a
naerobic bacteria in keratitis.
