The article compares the economic performance of the SWR 1000 with that of
conventional BWR plants. The SWR 1000 is seen to be superior especially in
personnel costs and plant costs. Operating costs and: fuel cycle costs are
approximatelyidentical. The SWR 1000 achieves its better economic character
istics not only as a result of its plant size, but also by systems simplifi
cations and through thr use of passive components. A detailed comparison, i
tem by item, is presented in a table. The authors forecast that the SWR 100
0 is going to underrun even the electricity generating costs of the optimiz
ed EPR and of combined-cycle power plants;. This means that the main precon
dition for a building, decision exists irrespective of political conditions
and factors pertaining to the national economy.
