Fifteen corn kernel and corn screening samples were analyzed for the p
resence of fumonisin toxins. Samples were extracted with acetonitrile/
water (1:1) and cleaned up with C-18 solid phase extraction (SPE) cart
ridges. Analysis of fumonisins was carried out by on-line capillary li
quid chromatography-fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (capillary
LC/FAB/MS). Two isomers of partially hydrolyzed fumonisin B-1 (PHFB1)
were detected in five samples, and N-acetyl fumonisin B-2 (FA(2)) was
detected in one sample. Hydrolyzed fumonisin B-1 (HFB1) was also dete
cted in one sample, but further confirmation is needed.
