An explosive-pressing procedure is described which allows one to prepare gr
een compacts of yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia with a nearly 100% relativ
e density. The kinetics of grain growth and sintering in powder compacts pr
epared by explosive and isostatic pressing are studied by differential ther
mal analysis, thermogravimetry, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy
in the temperature range 1000-1500 degrees C.
