Intracavitary leiomyomas represent a subtype of submucous leiomyomas and ra
rely are seen as a prolapsing or aborting leiomyoma.(1,2) In a study of 178
5 women undergoing abdominal surgery for uterine leiomyomas, Smith and coll
eagues(3) noted that the prevalence of prolapsing submucous leiomyomas was
2.7%. We describe an unusual case in which a previously considered intramur
al leiomyoma was associated with prolonged postpartum hemorrhage and was di
agnosed correctly with transvaginal ultrasonography as a large aborting sub
mucous intracavitary leiomyoma in a woman presenting with fever, persistent
uterine bleeding, and lower abdominal pain.
