Using epifluorescence microscopy on lipid vesicles containing hypericin or
several of its O-alkylated derivatives together with a fluorescence pH indi
cator it was shown that upon excitation of the respective hypericinate ion
an excited state derived proton is transferred to the indicator molecule. I
n addition, it could be also unequivocally derived that this proton origina
tes from one of the peri-hydroxyl groups of the pigment.
