Recent technologic advances in laparoscopic equipment have enabled surgeons
to apply operative endoscopic techniques to patients with gynecologic mali
gnancies. Operative laparoscopy has been described in the surgical staging
and treatment of patients with ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers.
It has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of gynecologic cancer ma
nagement; however, the use of operative laparoscopy for the treatment of pa
tients with gynecologic malignancies is still in its infancy, and until mor
e data accumulate, it must be considered a promising but unproven tool in t
his setting.
