In the genomes of various archaebacterial species essentially the some sequ
ence of approximately 30 bp is identified repeating over 100 times position
ed in several clusters. The periodicity of the repeat is close to 67 bp, ha
ving a linker of approximately 37 bp between neighbouring units. Small diff
erences found between the units are essentially the signatures that specify
first the cluster, and second the archaebacterial species to which the uni
ts belong. Similar repeats are found in the genomic DNA sequences of eubact
erial species, Aquifex aeolicus, and Myobacterium tuberculosis.
