Grafting copolymerization of styrene onto polypropylene fabric has been stu
died by using a gamma ray preirradiation technique. The polypropylene fabri
c samples were irradiated in an environment of air and nitrogen gas. The ef
fects of the absorbed dose, styrene concentration in methanol, reaction tem
perature and reaction time on the degree of grafting were determined. The e
ffects of a polyfunctional monomer and sulphuric acid on the grafting yield
were also examined. The samples irradiated in nitrogen gas gave a much hig
her degree of grafting than those in air. The addition of sulfuric acid and
polyfunctional monomer in the grafting solution enhanced greatly the graft
ing yield. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
