Iminophosphorane-mediated synthesis of the alkaloid cryptotackieine

A new synthesis of the alkaloid cryptotackieine based on the stepwise forma tion of the pyridine and indole ring is described. The key step, formation of the appropriate 3-arylquinoline, involves a Staudinger/aza-Wittig/electr ocyclic ring-closure process.
