Abstract
Tetrahydroxy[2.2]metacyclophanes are formed via the aluminium mediated pina col coupling reaction of 1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehydes. The results indicate that the presence of functional groups in the aromatic ring of the dialdeh ydes plays an important role in the formation of the cyclophane structure. intramolecular coupling reactions as well as a comparison of different redu ctive systems are discussed in the work.
