A new numerical-experimental method for identification of mechanical proper
ties of composite materials is outlined. For the first time it is proposed
to use the design of experiments to solve the identification problems. The
basic idea of the proposed approach is thai, a simple mathematical model is
determined only by the information about the response of the material in t
he reference points of the design of experiments. Therefore, a significant
reduction (about 50 - 100 times) of calculations of identification function
al can be achieved in comparison with using a conventional methods of minim
ization. Examples of identification of elastic properties of laminated comp
osites from the measured eigenfrequencies of the rectangular plates are dis
cussed.
