Abstract
With the example of a rotating pendulum four different methods for the stab ility analysis of its relative equilibria are compared. In particular new d evelopments in the stability theory of symmetric Hamiltonian systems like t he Reduced Energy Momentum method are compared with classical approaches su ch as Routh's method.
