This study investigated if self-reports of alcohol use correlated with estr
adiol and testosterone levels in adolescent females. Ninety-four female sen
ior high school student volunteers from 2 schools completed a questionnaire
regarding alcohol use. Twenty cc of blood was assayed for estradiol, testo
sterone, progesterone, and FSH. Total estradiol levels were higher in femal
es who reported current alcohol use (p less than or equal to 0.05), and fem
ales with higher levels of both testosterone and estradiol were more likely
to be using alcohol currently (p less than or equal to 0.05). Hormonal rel
ationships associated with adolescent alcohol use may be related to future
health risks of alcohol use and/or increased risk of alcohol use.
