The problem of atmosphere-ocean interaction in the middle latitudes is
discussed. The description of the model of general circulation of the
atmosphere, developed in the Institute of Numerical Mathematics of Ru
ssian Academy of Sciences, is given. The quality of this model with re
gard to simulation of the mean-January circulation is shown. The model
of the upper layer of the ocean is formulated and results of simulati
ons for the winter regime in the North Atlantic are presented. A metho
d of coupling the atmospheric and oceanic blocks is described. The mod
el is used for simulations of a January low-frequency variability of t
he Atlantic ocean surface temperature and of dynamical characteristics
of the atmospheric circulation. On the basis of results of numerical
experiments and of comparison with observed data an analysis of the ro
le of the ocean with regard to simulation of quasi-regimes of the atmo
spheric circulation is given.
