A novel series of anionic derivatives with low-foaming properties were prep
ared by the reaction of polyoxyethylenated stearylamine and maleic anhydrid
e. The structure of these surfactants was confirmed by infra-red, nuclear m
agnetic resonance and elemental analysis. The surfactants were found to dis
play low-foaming properties and exhibit good surface-active properties. The
degree of aggregation of direct dyes in dye-surfactant systems was found t
o influence the rate of cotton dyeing.
