Urogenital tuberculosis remains a scourge despite the efficacy of new tuber
culostatic agents. Its frequency and unpredictable evolution have considera
ble socio-economic impact One hundred and nine cases of urogenital tubercul
osis have been reviewed. Our patients were young adults (average age: 34 ye
ars). The diagnosis relies on a range of indications, especially intravenou
s urography. Cystitis is the most frequent sign (73.4%). We have found baci
llus in urine of 41 patients (38%). All patients started tuberculostatic re
gimes, and for 32 patients we coprescibed corticosteroids. The complication
s demonstrated the evolution of the disease: renal destruction (36 cases),
ureteral strictures (20 cases), contracted bladders (27 cases), genital dam
age (33 cases). Surgery was necessary for 61 patients. nephrectomy (31 case
s), orchidectomy (five cases), epididimectomy (seven cases), ureterovesical
reimplantations (15 cases), ureteroileoplasty (five cases) and retrograde
ureteral stenting (six cases). Urogenital tuberculosis is still an actual s
erious disease because of its latent evolution. Prognosis is improved by ea
rly diagnosis and clearly established therapy. (C) 1999 Elsevier; Paris.
