An aperture-coupled CDRA is theoretically and experimentally investigated.
The effects of : 1) the aperture size and 2) the air gap between the CDRA a
nd the aperture on the resonant frequency, return loss, radiation pattern,
directivity, unloaded Q-factor, and impedance bandwidth are numerically sim
ulated. Based on the numerical results obtained, simple closed-form express
ions are obtained enabling an antenna engineer to incorporate these effects
into the design of an aperture-coupled CDRA. The predicted results were ex
perimentally verified for several aperture sizes, and good agreement was ob
tained. Results showed that the feeding scheme and the fabrication imperfec
tions have a significant effect on the performance of CDRAs. (C) 1999 John
