Abstract
A new freshwater ascomycete genus Proboscispora is introduced to accommodat e P. aquatica collected on wood submerged in streams in Australia and the P hilippines. Proboscispora is characterized by having immersed, ellipsoidal, papillate ascomata, septate tapering paraphyses, cylindrical unitunicate a sci with a refractive apical ring, and 3-septate, hyaline ascospores provid ed with coiled or proboscis-like bipolar filamentous appendages. Proboscisp ora aquatica is illustrated at the electron microscope level and is compare s with Annulatascus, Ceratosphaeria, Ceriospora, Ceratostomella and Rivulic ola, with which is shares some common characters.
