Abstract
We discuss the condition for the validity of equilibrium quantum-statistica l mechanics in the light of recent developments in the understanding of cla ssical and quantum-chaotic motion. In particular the ergodicity parameter i ntroduced by Casati and Chirikov is shown to provide the conditions under w hich quantum-statistical distributions can be derived from the quantum dyna mics of a classical ergodic Hamiltonian system.
