SYNTHESIS AND REACTIVITY IN INORGANIC AND METAL-ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
This paper reports the isolation of mixed ligand complexes of the type MAL,
where M = Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(IT), Cd(II) A = 8-quinolinol(HQUIN) and L = a
mino acid (glycine-HL' or aspartic acid-H2L"). The complexes of Ni(II) and
Cu(II) are coloured and insoluble in common organic solvents. Their structu
res have been elucidated on the basis of magnetic, electronic and IR spectr
oscopy. Electronic spectra, in conjunction with magnetic moments, are in ac
cord with an octahedral environment around the central metal ion in all met
al chelates except the Zn(II) and Cd(II) chelates. All chelates are paramag
netic except the Zn(II) and Cd(II) compounds which are found to be diamagne
tic. A study of the thermal properties and antimicrobial activity of the co
mplexes has also been carried out.
