In an attempt to address several consumer-related issues surrounding automo
bile safety, this article observes the competing interests of groups which
have been involved in regulating, defining, and providing automobile safety
. Specifically, the article discusses: automotive safety, including an anal
ysis of its regulation; the roles played by both the Insurance Institute fo
r Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrat
ion (NHTSA) in measuring automotive safety; the general public's view of au
tomotive safety and the subsequent response by automakers; and several prob
lems regarding current safety measurements.
