Abstract
The availability of interventions to reduce mother-to-child transmissi on of HIV infection has highlighted the need to identify infected preg nant women, and has intensified the debate about antenatal screening, counselling and consent. Although mandatory screening has been propose d, the voluntary approach is preferred, and is more likely to be accep table.
