Sulphated green rust can result from the partial oxidation of FeSO4 by wate
r itself in the presence of sodium hydroxide (Fe(II)/OH- = 0.600). The equi
librium constant of the reaction is higher than 3.10(4), the standard poten
tial of Fe-6(OH)(12)SO4/Fe(OH)(2) system being -0.56 V vs. NHE. An equipmen
t under vacuum allows to detect the hydrogen release and to evidence the ty
pical blue-green colour of the GR otherwise identified by its Raman spectru
m. Consequently this compound can be formed in anoxic media; it is stable i
n the presence of hydrogen. (C) Academie des sciences/Elsevier, Paris.
