A 22-year-old female donkey was referred for evaluation of gross hematuria,
anemia and thrombocytopenia. Renal origin hemorrhage was diagnosed and a l
eft nephrectomy performed following blood transfusion. Normal urination was
attained after surgery, but the donkey could not be maintained. Necropsy r
evealed renal hemangiosarcoma. Although abnormalities were not detected ant
emortem, hemangiosarcoma was found in the spleen, liver, mesentery and larg
e intestine. Hemangiosarcoma should be considered in the differential diagn
osis of hematuria in the donkey, and involvement of other organs should be
considered if renal hemangiosarcoma is found.
