Abstract
Metal particle tape is well known to have made remarkable progress in recen t years due to parallel developments in the magnetic powders, the formulati on and dual coating technology. There are theoretical grounds to anticipate further progress in all three aspects and it is certain that the limits of the technology have not yet been reached. Apart from the ability to improv e overwrite performance, we see the main advantage of dual coating in the g reater freedom it gives to the tape formulator and in the consequent superi or physical properties of the tape. An intrinsic recording advantage due to reduced demagnetisation is not yet apparent. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevie r Science B.V. All rights reserved.
