Abstract
A simple theory (practically without any adjustable parameter) for calculat ing the diffusion-limited rates of forming loops of arbitrary length in pol ypeptide chains is given. The time needed to form a tertiary contact betwee n met80 and his18 in Cytochrome c is 40 mu s, which is in excellent agreeme nt with experimental determinations.
