Abstract
The R-matrix-Floquet theory of multiphoton processes is extended to en able harmonic generation rates for a multi-electron atomic system inte racting with a strong linearly polarized laser to be calculated. The m atrix elements of the harmonic components are defined and several meth ods for their computation are described. In the two companion papers, applications of the theory to one-electron systems and to third-harmon ic generation in magnesium are presented.
