Abstract
Histone acetylation acts as a landmark and determinant for chromatin f unction. Active roles in the transcription and assembly of chromatin h ave been discovered for histone acetyltransferases and deacetylases. T his review highlights these roles and discusses their significance for the maintenance of cell differentiation.
