A highly luminescent tetranuclear copper(I) compound, [Cu-4(C equivalent to
CPh)(4)L-2] (Cu-4) [L= 1,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)-3,6-dioxaoctane], was us
ed as an emitting material for fabrication of light-emitting diode (LED) de
vices. The Cu-4 doped poly(vinyl carbazole) device displays electroluminesc
ence (lambda(max)= 520 nm) that is similar in energy to the photoluminescen
ce recorded in dichloromethane. The device characteristics and mechanism of
electroluminescence have been studied.
