Abstract
We report the investigation of the photon-avalanche effect in Nd3+-ion dope d LiKYF5:Nd3+ laser crystals at low temperature. Pumping at approximate to 603 nm wavelength, which is not resonant with Nd3+-ion ground-state absorpt ion leads to intense violet luminescence from the P-2(3/2) emitting level l ocated at approximate to 26230 cm(-1) wavenumber. This upconversion process is optimum for a Nd3+-ion doping level of approximate to 1.6 at%.
