Abstract
Analyzing powers for (p) over right arrow n --> pp(S-1(0))pi(-) were measur ed at beam energies 353, 404, and 440 MeV by extracting the quasifree proce ss from (p) over right arrow d --> ppp pi(-). Partial wave amplitude analys is yields a significant contribution from the isospin 1, s-wave channel. Th is contribution is relatively much larger than that expected from theoretic al models which have been successful in describing the isospin 1, s-wave ch annel behavior of pp --> pp pi(0) cross sections at threshold.
