Abstract
Epiphytic lichens are sensitive to air pollution. Founded upon this kn owledge a guideline was provided by VDI concerning with that object. B etween 1990 and 1993 a lichen mapping of Hessen/Germany was undertaken . It was the aim of the investigation to find out the sources and the distribution of air pollution in this region. At 3500 points distribut ed more or less evenly over the whole area the number and the frequenc y of the occurring lichens were explored at about 30 000 free-standing deciduous trees. The survey followed a new standardized method of lic hen mapping (Guideline VDI 3799 Part 1).
