A Specialized Spine Centre for diagnosis and treatment of spine deformities
in children has been organized based on a topographic computer system (TOD
P-system) for estimation of spine deformities (created at Novosibirsk Resea
rch Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Russia) It has been functio
ning for two years. All children population at the age from 7 to 15 years (
25600 children) of one of the districts of Novosibirsk was examined during
this period. The examination revealed: the general level of spine morbidity
is 37.5%, of scoliosis -7.5%, and of scoliosis with more than 20 degrees -
2%. Plane deviations from the norm: in frontal plane 32,1%, in sagittal -
58.2%, in horizontal - 64.5%. 20% of children with pronounced spine deformi
ties were referred to monitoring. 1500 children underwent conservative trea
tment. Favourable results were achieved in 92% of treated patients. The exp
erience of this Spine Centre demonstrated high efficiency of the activity o
f such kind of institutions.
