The amination reaction of chlorometylated polystyrene and polysulfone with
4-(dimethylamino) cinnamic acid was studied. The resulting polymers are ins
oluble in DMF due to the presence of quaternary ammonium:groups which facil
itate the aggregation of photoactive cinnamoyl groups and consequently thei
r photocyclodimerization. Also, low molecular weight quaternary compounds w
ere synthesized by the amination reaction between chlorometylated derivativ
es (benzyl chloride, allyl chloride, respectively) and 4-(dimethylamino) ci
nnamic acid or 4-(dimethylamino) cinnamic benzyl ester.
