This paper presents a statistical model that establishes a relationship bet
ween the annual electricity consumption per capita and some variables which
characterize a sample of Canadian cities. These variables are related to u
rban density, demography and meteorological data as well as economic activi
ties and energy context which distinguish cities. A larger discussion conce
rning the benefit of increasing urban density in order to reduce the city e
nergy consumption is included. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights re
