In 1989, the authors. who are responsible for a unit comprising 22 beds for
full hospitalization, set up a hospitalization model which involved 2 peri
ods of 9 days in hospital separated by 9 days when the patient returned hom
e. Statistical comparison of the durations of hospitalization based on a sa
mple of 100 patients hospitalized in 1985, in other words before this syste
m of two-stage hospitalization was set up, versus 100 patients hospitalized
in 1995 reveals that this approach has reduced the length of stay of patie
nts with mood disorders from 21 days to 17 days.
