A gas electron multiplier (GEM) produced from a 100-mu m-thick polyimide fi
lm with 60-mu m-diameter holes is described. The maximum gas gain obtained
with an Ar/CH4(91/9) gas mixture was 5000. ain up to count rates of 2 x 10(
4) particles/(mm(2) s) was obtained. The possibility of GEM operation with
and without a microstrip gas chamber is discussed.
