Abstract
EDXRF and ICP-AES were applied to investigate the dissolution of lead from the surface layer of glazed pottery vessels into different water media of d ifferent acidities. The kinematics of lead release were measured by varying the pH and temperature of the liquid medium. The highest lead content meas ured in the liquid (0.01 mol l(-1) citric acid solution) was 500 ppm after a 5000 min leaching time. Lead extraction was found to depend on the acid t ype (citric and tartaric acid), the origin or manufacturer of the pottery, the pH of the liquid and time and temperature of dissolution.
