This paper presents the solution of the problem of determining the spot siz
e of a scanning beam in the case of a nonlinear (binary) image-recording pr
ocess. It shows that the size of the actual spot in this case is a factor o
f two less than that of the air image and an order of magnitude more stable
against variations of the beam parameters. The allowances on the image cur
vature are analyzed for various cases of recording. (C) 1999 The Optical So
