Multiple system atrophy

This article discusses the classification, pathology, diagnosis, and treatm ent of multiple system atrophy. The nosologic relationships between olivopo ntocerebellar atrophy, striatonigral degeneration, and Shy-Drager syndrome are considered. Characteristic pathologic findings and the occasional inher itance of the disorders are reviewed. Clinical topics include diagnostic st udies and a variety of symptomatic treatments for multiple system atrophy.
