Having studied geography opens up excellent opportunities in the labour mar
ket in France: there are hardly any other countries in Europe in which this
field has a similarly excellent status with respect to economy, science an
d administration as in the 'Grand Nation'. This was achieved by a concentra
tion on practical skills and a high flexibility within a curriculum offerin
g a hierarchy of degrees for studies of different lengths and a course plan
to be adhered to rigidly. The self-confidence and the esprit de corps of t
he geographers in France help to maintain this high status.
