Abstract
Magnetron Sputter Ion Plating is a flexible technique which allows the depo sition of virtually any material and which gives uniform coatings with dens e coherent structures and excellent adhesion. It is possible to control the properties of the coatings by controlling the deposition parameters and al so by the introduction of additional materials into the coating. The deposi tion system is described in some detail. The method for the deposition of p ure chromium is given and it is shown how the hardness of the coating can b e increased by the addition of varying amounts of nitrogen. Other corrosion resistant coatings such as stainless steel or aluminium are readily deposi ted and the properties can be adjusted by fire addition of other alloying e lements.
