Comparisons of bednets treated either with alphacypermethrin or lambdacyhal
othrin showed similar effectiveness by various entomological criteria. Lamb
dacyhalothrin was associated with significantly more reports of nasal irrit
ation than alphacypermethrin. The 2 net treatments were equally effective i
n reducing incidence of new malaria infections and the treated nets were mu
ch more effective than untreated nets. These measurements were made after c
learing existing infections with chlorproguanil-dapsone. This drug combinat
ion was more than 99% effective in clearing infections 1 week after treatme
nt and a study of children taken to an altitude with no malaria transmissio
n showed that there were very few recrudescences.
