Using aqueous hydrogen peroxide containing 30% H2O2, solid acid catalysts w
ere compared in their performance as catalysts for the transformation of cy
clopentanone to delta-valerolactone. It could be shown that organic ion exc
hange resins with sulphonic acid groups providing acid functionality are pr
omising catalysts for this reaction. The variation of several reaction para
meters was studied in more detail. The obtained results were compared to in
vestigations of zeolites and Nafion(R) composite materials. (C) 1999 Elsevi
