Abstract
The reaction of 2-aminobenzimidazole 1 with benzonitrile in the presence of anhydrous stannic chloride gives N-(benzimidazol-2-yl)arylamidines 2 in 65 -82% yield. Cyclocondensation of 2 with triethyl orthoesters affords 2-aryl -4-alkyl-1,3,5-triazino[1,2-a]benzimidazoles 5 in high yield. A possible me chanism for the formation of 5 is proposed.
