To train our postgraduate students to be effective, we involve them in indu
strial consultancy projects for their first 6-12 months, where they do the
major parr of the work. This provides excellent training on a small scale w
ith practical aspects, such that the students and their projects can be clo
sely supervised and guidance supplied, and hence rapid learning occurs. Thi
s paper looks at the lessons learnt from an industrial battery charger.
